“Experimental” Bus Trip to White Rock Lake — 1925

In the 1920s, White Rock Lake was becoming a popular nearby recreation area and beauty spot. It was a bit of a drive to get out there, though. Bus operators were wangling to get the contract to transport tired and pale Dallasites to a nice day out at the lake. The caption accompanying the above photo:
“This city type bus will make an experimental trip to White Rock with city officials, applicants for bus franchise and newspaper men to test adaptability of various routes to bus line operation. Busses [sic] of this type, said C. D. Cain, who has been voted the White Rock franchise informally by the City Commission, will be run on the line when the franchise is formally granted.”

It is amazing what 90 years later life became in the White Rock Lake area. We can only imagine what is deemed “experimental” now and how it will be viewed in 90 years.

White Rock lake is one of the treasures of Dallas. There is a huge park and trail for outdoor activity, cycling, and running. I enjoyed my time here with friends. The lake is beautiful and serene. Plus it’s free to access so that is one of the things the city council has done for its people

I LOVE White Rock Lake! I go every weekend to run and enjoy the scenery. The perimeter of the lake is about 10 miles so if you are training for a 1/2 marathon as I was, this is a great place to train. Even though I live in Allen, I drive 40 minutes to the lake to run because there is no other place like it in Dallas. The houses around the area provide great eye candy as well. You see all sorts of people and families here, picnicking, relaxing, biking, walking, sailing, and running. It truly feels like you are not in Dallas which is very appealing!
