From the Vault: “Meet Me In Dallas, On June the 23rd”

The greatest, twangiest, seediest song set in Dallas (which you might never have heard) is Jeannie C. Riley’s Grammy-nominated “The Back Side of Dallas.”
One of the lines of the song is “Meet me in Dallas on June the 23rd, his letter read” — and today is June the 23rd. More about this song can be found in the 2017 Flashback Dallas post “Meet Me In Dallas, On June the 23rd.”

Wow, she’s sitting on a Honda Super Hawk motorcycle! My first motorcycle was a Honda Super Hawk. Never had anything like Jeannie sitting on it!

Chris, the bike was the first thing I noticed. Is that a 305? I would still trade a kidney for one of those.

YES… It was a 305 Super Hawk, red and silver. I’ve had six others including a beautiful black ’70 BMW R60 w/white pin striping, but that Super Hawk was my first and favorite. That bike had incredible performance for its displacement. The only change I made to it was to ad exhaust megaphones and one size larger carb jets. Now at 78 my balance is so poor I don’t even think I could ride Hilary’s broom stick! Great fun. Great memories.

And I forgot to mention… My Super Hawk had low European style sport handlebars. Better handling than the customary American motorcycle with high bars.

At Marsh Jr High in the 60’s we had one guy who had a 305. Had a few 250’s,150’s, 90’s, and dozens of 50’s But when “Booger” would light his 305 with megaphones everybody would stop to watch. Thanks Paula for having a place where two old men can have a Flashback. Man I am old, I just noticed there’s a girl setting on the bike.

I was at Highland Park. Several had Triumphs and Harleys. i was the only lowly Honda owner there. my last bike was a Royal Enfield Bullet 350 of about 2005. totally retro!

She sure was cute! I love how off-kilter and weirdly-keyed that song is. I wonder if she was lip-synching? If she was, she sure did nail it.
