Dallas Baseball Team — ca. 1910

Team photo, circa 1910… (click for larger image)

I came across this circa-1910 photo on eBay about a year and a half ago. I thought it was unusual because of the presence of an African American man posing with the team. Sports teams weren’t integrated at this time — was he part of the team but not a player? I don’t know what’s written on his shirt, but it doesn’t have “Dallas” on it like the ones the others are wearing. What do you think?
Happy Opening Day!

I won that auction. It is a small image but a good one

When ya blow up it up it almost looks like someone has written on the photo with a marker. It appears that the ‘P’ extends to the mans arm.Need to see the actual photo. It’s for sure not Dallas like the rest of the team.

Does anyone have any pics of Barnet Field… I may have the name wrong or spelled wrong. It was at the edge of Oak Cliff and easy to get there on the 11 Hampton or 10 Sunset but the buses often quit running before the game was over and I had a really long walk. What was the name of our old team? It seems to me like it was the Spurs!

Burnett Field, Dallas Eagles, Ft Worth Cats. We would go by there to visit my Grandparents across the river.

Being from Oak Cliff before years of doing radio, such as KVIL, Burnet came out as Barnet when I was 5… and now at 70, got the accent back! I’ll never forget the day after I came back to the studio from the K… vilocopter, and Chapman had me listen to a tape of me on the morning show and his eyes went even more wide than usual as I commented about a See-ment truck overturning in Watch-a-Hat-she on I-35. I was so bad I was wondering why he played this back to me. LOL

Just a quick addition a year later to my above comment… if I can find old Bill Mercer (best man at 2 of my weddings), I bet he’ll know who that black Baseball player is.
