Bird’s-Eye View Down Main Street — 1954

A nice color photo showing Main Street, looking west from about Field. For reference, Hotel Southland was in the 1200 block of Main, at Murphy, and Turner’s Clothiers, across the street, was at 1113 Main.
There’s a lot to look at (click to see a larger image). It’s always nice to see a viaduct (top right).

The first thing I thought of looking at that picture was the elevator operators in those buildings. I thought that had to be the most fun job in the world when I was a kid. My Mom worked at the “Big Red” sears store downtown so the elevator man would let me work the lever much to the horror of the shoppers. Thanks Paula for bringing back that great memory.

I grew up in Fort Worth, but did make a few trips to Dallas with my parents. We went to the massive Sears store on Lamar to shop a bit. Fast forward to 1998 and I was the project engineer on the old Sears store, turning it into loft apartments.

Where’s the courthouse — Old Red?

It’s hidden by the tall light gray building in the middle distance and just to the left of center of the image.

Sanger Harris, the college for those of us trying not to get drafted. Well it didn’t work.
