Ewing Avenue, Oak Cliff

Stately and serene Oak Cliff… (click for larger image)

Another lovely hand-colored postcard from the C. Weichsel Co. — this one shows a sleepy, gauzy-looking Ewing Avenue in Oak Cliff, probably around 1910. According to the 1910 Dallas directory, Ewing Avenue stretched from S. Jefferson (now E. Jefferson) to 18th Street (it may have extended beyond that, but 18th Street was, apparently, the city limits).
If anyone knows the location of this view or the owner of this house, please let me know. I don’t think any part of Ewing — North or South — looks like this anymore!

There’s one or tow homes left that even come close, around the 600 block south
If anyone needs a reason why HOA’s, Historic District, etc are needed, one only has to look at areas like this from around 1900 to see what was so beautiful now turned to a decrepit, run down, bad tax base for the city.

I wonder if it is where the Zoo parking lot is now. Looking at the Sanborn Map from 1922, there used to be houses there. The setbacks and topography are similar today too.

That’s certainly a possibility!

I grew up about 1 mile south of Ewing and Clarendon in the 40’s – 60’s.
All of the houses on Ewing at that time between Clarendon and Jefferson were quite modest. Certainly no 2 storys.
I suspect judging by the flat topography and caliber of the houses that the photo was taken on Ewing somewhere north of Jefferson.
Next time I am there I will explore N. Ewing , see if there are any remnant 2 storys.

I grew up at 903 18th St in a house my dad built in 1947. I was 3 yrs old. 903 18th is about 200 ft east of Ewing.
The house at the NE corner of Ewing and 18th was 2 story.
About 1/4 mi north of there there was another 2 story on the W side of Ewing. Very stately.
All these houses now gone.
And none resembled that postcard scene.
