“Mr. Wiggly Worm Does Much More Than Wiggle”

My first crush was on Mr. Peppermint, and I really, really, really loved Mr. Wiggly Worm.
This is a rather unfortunate depiction of my childhood TV pal, but how can you not love a smiling wiggly worm with a mailbox?
WFAA understood the appeal of Mr. W. W. They even built a whole broadcasting-trade-magazine ad around him. (Click to see it larger.)
Here he is again:
Mr. W. W. stayed at home for this one, but here we see Mr. Peppermint out mingling with his adoring public.
And, look, “Communications Center” — bet you haven’t heard that in a while!

These Mr. Peppermint advertisements were part of a series of WFAA-Channel 8 ads which ran for several years in television trade magazines.

I was too old for Mr. Wiggly Worm, but remember Jerry Haynes was everywhere on WFAA. He was called upon for every vacant spot to fill in, from news, sports and anything else where they needed him.

Jerry Haynes had more of a film career than most people are aware of, including “Places in the Heart” (1984) with Sally Field.

Mr. Haynes grew up in Plano and lived near my grandparents. My uncle played tennis with him in high school. I had a hard time believing they actually knew Mr. Peppermint! In the early 80s we went to see him at Richardson Square Mall. We approached him and when Mr. Peppermint called my uncle and grandmother by name I was so shocked!! He was so nice and I’m glad I was able to meet Mr. Peppermint.
