An ad with the famous local building making a cameo.
It’s called PLATEAU
…the wonder fabric by Pacific Mills
that’s so perfect for our Texas weather. Suits of
[redacted??] look like regular weight worsted
…yet can be worn most every month of the year.
A new shipment exclusive at Irby-Mayes.
I love this 1948 ad. Irby-Mayes was located — where else? — in the Mercantile Bank Building!

Keep up the great work Paula! I use to go to that bank with my mom back in the 50s. She was always greeted while we were standing in line.

Daddy always went to the Count for his suits. Next stop was Rudolph’s Meat Market where I was given a hot dog on butcher paper while Daddy shopped. Then it was off to Centennial, the liquor store with the animated Big Tex who pointed south toward the State Fair in neon. They gave me bubble gum. Last stop was Big Thicket at White Rock Lake to swing. Daddy sent me soaring with skin-the-cat. I returned years later, craving a swing. The wooden seats, wide and painted red, had been replaced with a dreadful black rubber U held up with chain links instead of the long smooth metal I remembered. I gave it a go, but was too uncomfortable to swing high. Safer, no doubt, but no fun at all. A major loss, in my book.
