The Kennedy Memorial — designed by architect Philip Johnson at the behest of Stanley Marcus — was dedicated on June 24, 1970. This postcard view is one I’ve never seen before. The caption from the back of the card:

Gee whiz. Look how empty the downtown area is. It could be the weekend, after 5, or during the day. Everyone is either at work or out of the city and at home. It’s so much more vibrant now. Especially on weekends with people visiting this and other sites.

Remarkable! This must have been one of the very first views of the Kennedy Memorial that was offered to the public, as the copyright date is 1970 and the memorial was dedicated that summer.
The printer, Thomas Dexter Press, was a big name in postcard printing from the Depression through the 1970s, when a slowing market forced them into some imprudent sales and mergers. They now work as a printer of church bulletins and religious supplies. The publisher, All-Tom Corporation in Arlington, was first registered with the Secretary of State in 1961 and was ALL over the postcard business in the ’60s and ’70s (see an example of their promotional cards here but are no longer in business.

[…] Speaking of familiar sights seen from unusual perspectives, I can’t get over how much I’m fascinated by this postcard of the JFK memorial in its earliest days. From the post “Aerial View of the JFK Memorial — 1970.” […]

Can anyone say they actually like this memorial or say that they feel it’s good architecture? Johnson was a great architect, but this is one of his mistakes.
